Welcome to ZenPlanner!

Hello Lovely Members,

We wanted to let you know that we’re going through a breakup. Yes, that’s right – we’re saying goodbye to our scheduling software Glofox as of December 31. But don’t worry – we’re on the rebound and will be moving forward with ZenPlanner. (You’ll recognize this name if you skated with us at The Church – yes, we’re getting back together with our ex. But they’ve changed!) This change will happen on January 1, so please continue to use Glofox for classes and sessions until Dec. 30.

If you currently have an active Rolla membership or credit pack, we are already in the process of securely migrating all of your information over to the new platform, so you won’t really have to do anything on Jan. 1 except what’s outlined below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your username will be the email address that is on your current GloFox account, but you will get a new temporary password in an automated email later this month from ZenPlanner. Subject: Rolla Skate Club – Vancouver – Your website login information
The sender will be from – messages-noreply@zenplanner.com Please use the link and password from that email the first time you use ZenPlanner.

(If you are new to Rolla and don’t have any kind of account with us yet, you will get access by purchasing a membership or credit pack online here or in-person at Rolla Skate Club.)

Your First Time Logging on to ZenPlanner

Mobile Member App: The easiest way to use your Zen Planner account is through our Member App, where you can manage your reservations and get important alerts from us. Simply download the App for free on your Apple or Android phone then login in with your new password.

On the Web: Go to this page on our website and login with your new password you received in the email. (NOTE: this is the ONLY place on the web where you can login to your Rolla account.)

Once you’re logged in:

  1. Please upload a new selfie! And make sure it’s your cute face in the photo, and not your dog or a sunset. This makes it easy for us to find you in the building in case of an emergency, or to help new staff get to know you. These photos are not public anywhere on the web.
  2. Check the info in your profile to make sure everything is accurate, including your email address, mobile phone number, payment information, emergency contact info, pronouns, date of birth, and anything else you think we should know.
How to Book a Class, Session or Course

Classes/Sessions: As always, class reservations and Open Skate/Ramp sessions will open 8 days before the date. Within the Member App, click on the calendar icon in the top right. You can reserve your spot or add yourself to a waitlist (if the class is full) by clicking the star next to the time you wish to attend. If you no longer can attend a class, simply click “Cancel Reservation.” NOTE: In the app, the calendar will only display classes which your membership allows access to!

Progressive Courses: Our multi-week courses will now be categorized as “memberships” so if you sign up for one and you already have a regular membership, the course will look like a secondary membership on your account. To register for a course, in the app click on your profile circle, click Purchase, and scroll to “Adult Progressive Courses.” If you are on an All-Access Membership, you will be able to use your 90% off code to get your member pricing!

Overall, ZenPlanner is going to function similarly to our old software but there will be some differences, so give yourself a little time to get to know your way around. Of course, new relationships take getting used to, and there may be complications as we work out the kinks – so we appreciate your patience! If you see any issues with your account after the launch date or you have questions, please email our Welcome Team at hello@rollaskateclub.com and we’ll do our best to get it resolved ASAP.

We strive to take the best care of all of our members, and knowing what classes you like and how often you’re here helps us do that. Help us take care of you by checking in every time you come to Rollerland. (Bonus – checking in avoids any unnecessary class no-show fees.)

Checking yourself in is easy with your GloFox mobile app! When you arrive at Rollerland, just open it up on your phone, then tap the blue Check-In button at the bottom of the main Timetable page to get your barcode. Then simply scan it at our groovy self-scanner and you’re good to go!

Things to note: 

  • If you are attending a multi-week progressive course, scan your app AND sign in on your class sheet at the Welcome Desk.
  • You cannot scan in after a class has started, so please let the Welcome Team know what class you are attending if you arrive late.
  • You can only scan in for one class at a time, so If you are attending multiple classes or sessions back-to-back, please come back and scan in for the second class, or let the Welcome Team know upon arrival.

No-Show and Late Cancelation Fees

Our prime time classes are filling up and our waitlists are growing! This means that some members aren’t getting into the classes they want, which bums us out immensely. An even bigger bummer is when people don’t show up for classes they’ve registered for and someone on the waitlist misses out on a chance to skate.

To combat this, members will be charged fees for late cancellations and no-shows. Proceeds from these fees will be donated to the Rollas Helping Rollas subsidy program.

Please take a minute to familiarize yourself with our cancellation policies here. In summary: Regular Rolla member classes (Learn, Play, Power, Tuesday Workshops) require 12 hours notice for cancellation.

For monthly members, this means:

  • If you cancel your spot in a class before the 12-hr deadline, you won’t be charged anything.
  • If you cancel your spot after the 12-hr deadline, you will be charged a $10 late cancellation fee.
  • If you don’t show up for the class you booked and you haven’t cancelled, you will be charged the $25 no-show fee.

(If you use Credit Packs, nothing will change – you will still lose your credit if you cancel after the 12-hr deadline.)

Of course there are exceptions because LIFE HAPPENS! So just drop us a note at hello@rollaskateclub.com if you have questions.

Cancelling is easy! The best way to keep track of all of your classes is in the GloFox app where you can cancel your spot with just a tap.

If you are on a waitlist but no longer want the spot, please remove yourself from the list so someone else on the waitlist can take the spot. Learn how to do that here.

You can avoid accidental no-shows by making sure you check yourself in for every class and session you attend. When you arrive, scan your GloFox app at the self-scanner at the Welcome Desk. If you are attending more than one class or session in a day, tell our friendly Welcome Team when you arrive, or roll back to the desk and scan again before your second class starts.

TL; DR – Plan ahead, use your GloFox app, check in when you arrive, and don’t blow off Rolla classes. Thanks for your cooperation!

Rolla Pathways – What’s Your Skate Goal?

Hey skaters!

We’ve created a graphic demonstrating the different Rolla pathways to help you make the most of your membership at Rollerland to get you to your ultimate skate goals!

We recommend a minimum of 3 months of consistently skating 1-2 hours a week, via our All Access Membership so that you can attend lots of Learn classes and Open Skates to practice, before moving on to other classes!

What’s your rollerskating goal?

  • Take a few Learn classes, then move on to a Play and/or Power class before taking the Dance, Derby Bootcamp, or Skatepark 8- or 4-week progressive courses. It is recommended to put yourself on a progressive course’s waitlist ASAP after registration opens, then deciding when the time comes if you are ready.
  • Take a few Learn and Play classes, then Dance Level 1, then Dance Level 2 drop-ins, then take additional workshops.
  • Take a few Learn, Play, and then Power classes before Derby Bootcamp or Skatepark.
  • Once you get confident with Play classes, take the 8-week Derby Bootcamp progressive to elevate your overall skate skills with drills, agility, and coordination training – Derby Bootcamp is an excellent course to take even if you don’t plan on playing Derby afterwards!
  • Take a few Learn and Play classes, then Skatepark 101, then join us for any Open Skates (self-guided) or a Skatepark Session Meetup which occur every Sunday from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, or Thursday from 8:00pm to 10:00pm to work on what you’ve learned in the skatepark, ask questions, and get additional support in a low-key meetup vibe like we do when skating the parks outdoors!

How to Get Into the Classes You Want!

We’re a busy place and lots of people want to skate! That means our most popular classes fill up quickly. Here are some insider tips and tricks to help you get into the classes you want.

Plan Ahead

  • You can book a class 8 days in advance, so if you know there’s a popular class you definitely want to take, set yourself a reminder on the day registration opens.
  • Our most popular classes are mid-week evenings after 6pm and weekend afternoons. So if your schedule allows, why not check out a Saturday or Sunday morning, Tuesday to Thursday lunch break, Monday evening, or other weekdays before 6pm?
  • When you arrive at a class that you definitely want to take the following week, check on GloFox before you leave to see if there is a spot, or ask our friendly Welcome Team to check for you.
  • If you are dying to skate that day and there is an Open Skate session at or around the same time as the class you’re hoping for, come to Rollerland anyway! People very often cancel at the last minute, and if you’re in the building, you can get the spot. Just tell the Welcome Team what class you’re hoping for, and they will let you know if a spot opens up. If you don’t get a spot, you can still practice your moves, say hi to friends, and get some skate time in.
  • Put yourself on the waitlist for every class you want if you know you can make it. People always cancel, and there is a good chance you’ll get a spotIf you don’t know how to use our waitlist system, keep reading…

Turn on your notifications!

SUPER IMPORTANT: if you add yourself to class waitlists, you need to turn on your GloFox app notifications. Otherwise, you won’t know if a spot has come up in the class you were hoping to get into, and waitlist spots are first come, first served! Here’s how you do it:

  1. Go to Settings → Notifications → Scroll down to GloFox and open it. 
  2. Turn on the toggle switch to Allow Notifications, and choose whatever way you want to get them. 

(We promise we will never, ever, ever send you any marketing or spam through your GloFox notifications. These are only for class and scheduling alerts.)

Waitlists – How-To

  1. Find the class you want. If it says “Waitlist Open”, click on the class, then tap “Join Waitlist” at the bottom. You’ll go to a confirmation screen and the class will be added to your Bookings.
  2. Make sure your GloFox notifications are on (see above)
  3. If you do get a spot in the class, you will be notified through GloFox. You’ll get a pop-up notification on your home screen, a notification will show up the next time you open your app, and you can see it in your Notifications list, which you can access through your Profile (tap the little round photo of you in the top left corner).
  4. If you have never downloaded the app before, you’ll receive an email notification.
  5. If you want the spot, go to Bookings, then Waitlist, then open the class. Tap “Join booking list,” and you’re in! 
  6. If you no longer want the spot, please cancel ASAP so someone else can get on the list. To cancel, go to your Bookings, choose Waitlist, tap on the class you no longer want, and click the Cancel button at the bottom. Then you’ve opened a new spot on the waitlist for someone else who can take it!

Prepping your Rollerskates for Outdoor Skating

Happy Summertime skaters! We all know what summer means: it’s time for outdoor skating!! So let’s talk about getting our skates ready for outdoor skating. The good news is most rollerskates only require a few quick changes to be ready for skating outside, so you don’t need to get a whole other pair of skates. (But you can do that too if you want to!)

The most important change for skating outside: Change up those wheels! Some wheels are great for both indoor and outdoor skating … but since outdoor surfaces are generally a bit ‘rougher’ you probably want to grab some softer wheels. Checkout the super detailed info below from Luludemon and Rollergirl if you want to know some more about wheels!

Everyone has a different preference for their own comfort, but here are some other quick things you might want to keep in mind for outdoor skating:

  • bigger toe stops will help you stop faster on asphalt
  • toe plugs are important if you’re taking out your stops outside for dancing (without toe plugs, dirt and debris can get inside and damage your skate)
  • toe guards / protectors, generally these are made of leather and will protect the toe of your leather boot from being scuffed on asphalt. Some folx on Etsy make some really cute designs too!
  • thick skate laces are more durable and don’t shred as easily on the pavement
  • rougher surfaces can vibrate through the skate and be felt in your feet and joints, thicker insoles or gel insoles can help make your ride smoother

Everything you Need to Know about Outdoor Wheels:
We got the lowdown from the legend herself Lisa Suggitt of Rollergirl.ca on choosing the right outdoor wheels! Here’s what she told us: “Wheels are super confusing and there are so many products out there. Basically you just need to consider size and hardness… 

Size: 
Big Wheels 65mm or bigger: These wheels are fast and roll over small debris and rough concrete better. The downside is that they are heavy, bulky and not very maneuverable.

Medium Wheels 62mm: These are the most versatile wheels. They are medium fast, roll reasonably well over debris and yet are light and maneuverable enough to practice outdoor dance.

Little Wheels 59mm or smaller: These wheels are super light and agile. Great for outdoor dance or skills training. But they are slow and don’t roll over debris as well as larger wheels.

Hardness: 
78A – Soft and gummy! These wheels give a very smooth ride. You won’t feel the surface of concrete as much. But they can be slower and less durable than harder outdoor wheels.

85A to 88A – Hybrid wheels and can usually be used both indoors and outdoors. They don’t offer as smooth of a ride but are usually a bit faster and last longer.”


Coach Cupid’s Outdoor rollerskates:

“I like a nice smooth ride when I’m skating outside so I’ve added extra soft insoles, and love the Radar Engergy 62mm gummy wheels. I mostly do street, trail and derby skating outside so I need to be able to stop quickly – and the Gumball toe stops are great for that. My outdoor skates are 14 years old and I think they’re still going strong because I’ve always used an extra leather toe guard that protects the front seams of my leather boots.” -Coach Cupid

Rollergirl’s favorite outdoor wheels are:

1. Road Hogs:
“These are the fastest wheels on the market. They are best for trail and road skating.  But big, bulky and heavy.”

2. Radar Energy 62mm
“These are one of my favourite all around outdoor wheels. They are medium fast, narrow and light weight. So they are good for trails but also good for outdoor dance and beginner skatepark.”

 3. Radar Ze “These are the affordable good value wheels. They are not as fast or smooth on rough concrete as other outdoor wheels but for people on a budget they are a great option.”

a. Store things in unorthodox places. We store our pizza stone in our ottoman under the blankets and with the board games 🙂
b. Create extra kitchen elbow room by getting a sturdy wood cutting board and setting it over half your stove. Use it for extra counter space, setting down your groceries, or actual chopping! Ours is a $19 IKEA special.
c. Sort your laundry into 2 baskets – stuff that goes in the dryer, and stuff that doesn’t. Makes it super easy to throw all the socks/underwear/PJs in on cold. Only sort your nicer clothes / athletic fabrics when it’s time to wash.

5. Booze tip from Tiny D: To serve white wine, put it in the fridge 60-90 minutes before serving. To serve red, put it in the fridge early, then take it OUT 60-90 minutes before serving! FANCY.

2 – As we all know, social isolation can take a real toll on our physical and mental well-being. Many of us structure our days around time spent with friends, family, and getting out and about. With the current situation, it’s making those important daily plans harder to do. Our very own Coach Barbie has made it her mission to help us all through this unprecedented time by taking our outdoor skating abilities to the next level! Introducing… Coach Barbie’s Outdoor Skate Series! In partnership with Rolla Skate Club, Coach Barbie is taking us on an outdoor journey by giving us her best roller skate tips, tricks, favourite products, and ways to stay safe during this time! Her goal is to inspire, excite and educate all levels of skaters, and help us get through this period together. New episodes will be coming to us each week (weather permitting) to keep us happy, healthy, and always improving. When in doubt, skate it out!

3 – Do you like the idea of yoga but you’re not too interested in all the hippie zen stuff? Or you’ve been to yoga classes in the past and been put off by all the perfect bodies swaddled in Lululemon doing headstands? Then Sailors Mouth Yoga is for you! Created by a roller derby chick from Flint, MI called A-bomb, we first experienced this awesomeness at RollerCon and loved every minute. The short version is that it’s yoga that involves a lot of swearing while you downward dog (Caution – definitely NOT child friendly.) But really you have to do it to truly understand how fun it is! So put on your stretchy pants, maybe grab a beer or glass of wine and enjoy this socially distanced yoga session with a sprinkling of expletives. All levels welcome! Your regular class will never feel the same….

Don’t let this week’s rainy forecast bring you down! Keep scrolling for some funky content to keep you busy courtesy of the Rolla Home Club!

1 – Rolla Weekly Challenge! Each week we’ll post a skills challenge for us all to work on together. Something you can do in a small space. Last week we got working on one of our favourite Rolla Skills – TRANSITIONS – using the Open & Close method. This week we’re focusing on the Pivot method.

Level 1 – Forwards to backwards – pivot on the toes
Level 2 – Rolling backwards – pivot on the heels to go forwards
Level 3 – Lift-off! Try a little hop to turn!

As we mentioned last week, transitions are super useful, and it’s never a bad idea to keep practicing. In the video below, Coach Booty Quake gives us some tips on how to nail our transitions using the pivot method.

3 – Fake it ’til you make it; a piece of advice we’ve heard time and time again. But how true is it? In her popular TED Talk, social scientist Amy Cuddy talks about how our body language governs how we think and feel about ourselves, and thus impacts our minds. According to her research, even if we aren’t feeling great, adapting powerful body language or power poses can have a hugely positive impact on how we feel! At a time when social and physical connection are absent from our daily lives, finding the strength to feel confident and powerful can be a struggle. Perhaps working a power pose or two into your daily routine can give you a little bit of inspiration! We hope everyone had an awesome, sunny long weekend. In today’s instalment of the Rolla Home Club, we’ve got some physical content to get those feet movin’, and some mental content to work those brain muscles.

1 – Rolla Weekly Challenge! In case you missed it the last few weeks, each week we’ll post a skills challenge for us all to work on together. Something you can do in a small space. It’s time to get working on one of our favourite Rolla Skills – TRANSITIONS! This week we’re focusing on the Open & Close method.

Level 1 – Start skating backwards (give yourself a push off a wall/chair if needed) then transition to forwards.
Level 2 – Start skating forwards then transition x 2
Level 3 – Full 360 degree transitions! Make sure to go both directions

Transitions are something that everybody could use a little work on! It’s a super useful skill and often one of the most challenging to master.  So this is a great opportunity to spend some time so you can really nail it! In the video below, Coach LuluDemon gives us some tips on how to do just that.

2 – If you haven’t heard of Brené Brown, well, today is the first day of the rest of your life. Brené Brown is a researcher, a storyteller, and an advocate for daring greatly. What does it mean, exactly, to dare greatly? To quote Brown herself:

“The phrase Daring Greatly is from Theodore Roosevelt’s speech “Citizenship in a Republic.” The speech, sometimes referred to as “The Man in the Arena,” was delivered at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, on April 23, 1910. This is the passage that made the speech famous:

It’s not the critic who counts; not the [person] who points out how the strong [person] stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the [person] who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly… who at best knows the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if [they] fail, at least fails while daring greatly.

The first time I read this quote, I thought, This is vulnerability. Everything I’ve learned from over a decade of research on vulnerability has taught me this exact lesson. Vulnerability is not knowing victory or defeat, it’s understanding the necessity of both; it’s engaging. It’s being all in. I think the first thing we have to do is figure out what’s keeping us out of the arena. What’s the fear? Where and why do we want to be braver? Then we have to figure out how we’re currently protecting ourselves from vulnerability. What is our armor? Perfectionism? Intellectualizing? Cynicism? Numbing? Control? That’s where I started. It’s not an easy walk into that arena, but it’s where we come alive.”

Coach Lulu’s Book Review: I’m currently reading “Dare to Lead” by Brené Brown. It’s a book that builds upon her work on shame and vulnerability that was showcased in her viral TED talk. It uses that research to inform how we can be better leaders within our companies, families and communities. As entrepreneurs, when things are busy we focus so much on the business, we often forget to focus on ourselves and our own learning. Now is a great time to ask the question “How can I be better at my role within my company? What new skills can I learn from home?” This book offers some really great practical tips on how to be a better leader within any type of organisation. And how we can learn to lead with our heads and our hearts. Thanks Michelle Sipl for the recommendation!

Hello and welcome to our Friday instalment of the Rolla Home Club. We’ve got some awesome content ahead to brighten up your weekend – so get ready for it!

1 – What do we always tell you? Bend your knees! Get lower! Well, it’s a little different in shoes than it is in skates. Booty wants you all to be able to squat with excellent form while we’re doing our Roller Derby Athletics workouts together, so watch and practice along with her!

3 – Rad California skater Morgan Weske gives us something to dance about! Below you’ll find Morgan’s groovy tutorial for her Quarantined Dance Skate – which can be danced and skated to any song of your choosing. If you’re a bit intimidated by some of the choreography, have no fear! There are a ton of individual tutorials to practice the moves individually before you link them all together into your choreographic masterpiece!

We had a blast connecting with ya’ll on our first Thursday Virtual Social Roll with host Luludemon!  We can’t wait to do it again next week!  Don’t forget – Thursday at 6pm we’ll be hanging out with Host Booty Quake and chatting about all things Architecture.  There might also be a dress up theme…… watch this space!

We’re comin’ at you with an exciting Tuesday newsletter. So let’s get to it!

1 – *NEW* Rolla Weekly Challenges! Each week we’ll post a skills challenge for us all to work on together. Something you can do in a small space. As always we’ll have levels so everyone can challenge themselves.This week, it’s One Foot Balance! Rollerskating on two feet brings us so much joy. But what about rollerskating on one foot? In the video below, resident coach Luludemon shows us how to ease into a One Foot Balance, and ways to challenge our bodies to build that skill.

Level 3 – One Foot Weave

2 – It can be challenging to find our groove in these tough times. However, one of our favourite YouTube skate sensations Dirty Deborah Harry has some awesome tips and tricks to learn and perfect the cross over/rock step move. Check out her video below, and give the move a go! Once you’ve got it down, turn up that music and dance like no one’s watching! Hey Rollas! Happy Friday!

Firstly – pat yourself on the back for making it through a FULL WEEK of physical distancing.  Rolla Skate Club is about so much more than rollerskating – it’s about this beautiful, diverse and amazing community that we’re building. So being unable to roll together .. well frankly it sucks.

But never fear! We are here to help you stay healthy, motivated and connected to the community we all love and cherish. As much as we can during these crazy times.

So without further ado…. fun stuff for YOU!

1 – Do you struggle with nailing those strong plow stops? Learning a new skill is partly about knowing the correct technique but a big part is about building up the right muscles for that specific skill. If you’ve ever left a Rolla class sore in places you’ve never felt sore before… you’ll know what we mean when we say “Rollerskating uses muscles that we don’t use in regular life!”  Luckily the fabulous Booty Quake is here to show you how to target the SPECIFIC muscles we need to use for Plow Stops in this awesome Off-Skate Workout.  Work it!

2 – Get your Moonwalk on!  Now that your thighs are super strong from that off-skates workout, Booty Quake shows you how to get your groove on with one of our fave small-space dance moves.  Get practicing for those Hot Summer Rolla Parties!

Hey Rollas!

Today we’re going to show you some ways to keep your gear and skates in tip-top shape! Once everything is neat and tidy, hop on those skates and get ready to bust a move to one of our favourite dance tunes!

1 – A well-worn pair of skates can gather lots of dust and dirt on its bearings. Here’s BruiseBerry Pie’s comprehensive video on how to keep those bearings nice and shiny:

April 7th 2022 ||  Proof of Vaccination no longer mandatory as of April 8

Rolla Skate Club continues to follow all guidelines set forth by the Provincial Health Officer. As of April 8, proof of vaccination will not be required to attend Rolla events or classes. We know that 91% of Vancouver adults have been vaccinated, which has been so important to keeping our community as healthy as possible, and allows our healthcare system to function.

We encourage all our members and guests to continue to follow public health guidance, to get vaccinated and boosted, to wear a mask in crowded places, and stay home when ill.

March 11th 2022 ||  Masks are OPTIONAL at Rolla Skate Club as of March 12th 

Hello Rolla skaters ✨
As you’ve heard, the PHO has removed the mask mandate, effective immediately. We know that this change will bring up different feelings for different folks, and these are all valid!

As of Saturday March 12, masks will be optional at Rolla Skate Club classes and events.
Vaccine checks continue to be required for now.

We know for some of you this can’t come soon enough. For others it will be uncomfortable and too soon.

Let’s all respect and support each others’ personal choices – whether it’s to stay masked, to maintain personal space, or to not wear a mask.

What a whirlwind two years we’ve all been through together. We’ve done such hard work to keep each other safe. We are excited that things seem to be on the upswing. Let’s continue to be kind and take care of one another 💙
